Lacquer miniatures rank as one of the most original and diverse handicrafts that developed in keeping with century old traditions. It takes around 6 months for the artist to make this lacquer casket. This box is made of paper-mâché which could be shaped into widely diverse forms. It is painted with tempera (pigment) painting and golden powder. This box is lacquered about 8-10 times.
This box is called “July” and belongs to the collection “Seasons” made in the Kholui painting style. The shape of this box draws our attention at first sight, irregular with arounded corners. This laquer miniature is richly decorated with a golden powder all around. In the center of the box we can see the main characters – a young girl and a boy. The composition also includes a landscape, as it is traditional to depict a multicolored background. The box is painted in warm and soft colors. The couple is an allegory of youth, love, and harmonic summer nature.
