The heart of the city is Peter and Paul’s Cathedral. The city was first founded as a fortification and later as a seaport. Peter the Great wanted to defend St. Petersburg from the enemy and according to legend the angel on the top of the spire is always guarding and protecting the city. Ships here remind us about the first regular fleet in Russia, which was organized by Peter the Great.
