Written in 1820, when Pushkin was very young, Ruslan and Lyudmila was his first major work. Its appearance signaled the birth of a genius who was soon to make all of Russia resound with his name. “The Sun of Russian poetry”, as the poet came later to be called, was rising. In Ruslan and Lyudmila, a poem written in a light and humorous vein and characterized by an easy grace and lucidity, Pushkin saw fit to present this heroic past in a facetious light and to parody the mumbo-jumbo of sorcery and mysticism.
The majority of Russian fairy tales end up with a wedding, but the story of the poem "Ruslan and Lyudmila" unexpectedly begins with a wedding. During the noisy, merry celebratory meal, an unprecedented force of hurricane wind flies in, claps of thunder are heard, and everything clouds up by fog. But when the gloom is scattered, all guests can see that Lyudmila disappeared. Improbable tests challenge the main characters, but the strength of their faithful love will demolish all obstacles on the way to happiness.
