This set of Matryoshka dolls is completely handmade and unique. Each single doll is made of natural wood (linden tree). They are all mostly painted with tempera and richly decorated with golden leaf. The dolls are usually covered with 4-6 layers of lacquer.
Two variations of this fairy tale are known. The folk fairy tale "Snow Maiden" by Russian writer A.N.Ostrovsky is depicted on the given nesting doll. An old couple lived in a nice and quiet Russian village. They seemed to be very happy together, but unfortunately they had no children. One day they saw kids playing outside making a snow man. The old man and woman decided to make their own snow maiden. They were so exited while making this figure out of snow and felt as it was their own child. The next day this snow figure became alive and turned into a beautiful little girl…
