Lacquer miniatures rank as one of the most original and diverse handicrafts that developed in keeping with century old traditions. It takes around 6 months for the artist to make this lacquer casket. This box is made of paper-mâché which could be shaped into widely diverse forms. It is painted with tempera (pigment) painting and golden powder. This box is lacquered about 8-10 times.
The theme of love is one of the central subjects of lacquer miniatures; and this box is a very good example. The moment of farewell is depicted here. Young lovers are saying goodbye to each other in the darkness of night. But they know it’s not for long – the next day they will meet again. This couple is dressed according to Russian traditions. The girl and boy, along with their horse, are painted in white, red, and blue colors (the horse is an allegory of a young man’s friend, who knows the way to his bride). The figures greatly contrast with the traditional black background, trimmed with gold, of the Palech painting style. This is a truly classic and romantic illustration.
