This set of Matryoshka dolls is completely handmade and unique. Each single doll is made of natural wood (linden tree). They are all mostly painted with tempera and richly decorated with golden leaf. The dolls are usually covered with 4-6 layers of lacquer.
This refined nesting doll is devoted to the Russian ballet known all over the world. It presents scenes from the great Russian composer P.I.Tchaikovsky’s “Swan Lake”.
It is about an enchanted white swan and Prince Siegfried, who is forced to choose a bride the next evening. In his frustration Prince Siegfried goes into the forest and there he sees a white swan which he is about to kill when suddenly the swan turns into a beautiful maiden named Odette and they fall in love. Siegfried promises to marry her and returns home. The next evening, when it is time to choose his bride, he sees a maiden, who looks like Odette, but is actually her evil twin Odille. Odille is accompanied by the evil magician Rothbart. He chooses her as his bride, but soon realizes that she is not his beloved Odette. He goes to the forest where he met Odette the first time and fights with Rothbart. The charm is lifted and Odette becomes a maiden again. Music from the “Swan Lake” is incredibly popular and always associated with Russian ballet. World famous is the “Dance of little swans” that is usually painted on different pieces of art.
This ballet is performed on stages of the best theatres in the world. In St.-Petersburg “Swan Lake” is the signature card and is always present in the repertoires of several theatres, including the Mariinsky theatre.
